Sofia is located in the central-western part of the country of Bulgaria. It shares its boundary with Balkan Mountains in the north, Vitosha Mountain in the south, the Lozen Mountain in the southeast and the Lyulin Mountain in the southwest. Sofia enjoys a central position in the Balkan Peninsula.

The Vitosha Mountain, located at a height of 1800 meters is the fourth largest mountain of Bulgaria. Cherni Vrah (2290 meters) is the highest peak of Vitosha. As per the geography of Sofia, the valley of Sofia is divided into three levels: middle, upper ad uppermost. The middle part of the valley is at a height of 1700 meters above sea level. The upper part lies at an elevation of 1850 meters and the uppermost part is at a height of 1900 meters above sea level.
The weather of Sofia is highly regulated by foehn winds blowing from the south-southwestern direction. The city enjoys a moderate continental type of climate, August being the hottest month and January being the coldest month. During summer, temperature can reach to a level of 35ºC. In the months of December to February, temperature dips down to 0°C.
