Sofia Climate


Sofia enjoys a moderate continental type of climate. The climate of Sofia can be divided into summer, winter, monsoon, spring and autumn. August is the hottest month in Sofia and January is the coldest one.

During summer in Sofia, temperature can reach up to 35ºC. However, the month of June is much cooler, when the temperature becomes 22ºC. July and August months are influenced by cool North-West and North-East winds. The nights experience a warm weather.

The temperature generally dips down to 0°C from the months of December to February. During the month of January, the average temperature of Sofia measures -4.9°C. Winter in Sofia is chilling during the night hours. A small amount of rainfall takes place in this season. Snowfall also takes place in winter.
The annual rainfall in Sofia is about 650 millimeters. Maximum rainfall takes place during spring and autumn. The average rainfall in Sofia is approximately 28 millimeters in January and 75 millimeters in the middle of the year.

The best time to visit Sofia is during the autumn and spring season. Spring in Sofia is influenced by cold north and warm south winds. The high mountain regions of Sofia witness snowfall during spring time. Cyclones generating from North-Western Europe influence Sofia in autumn months. The temperature varies from 5ºC to 18ºC during autumn.

A unique feature of the Sofia climate is that the place can experience a very warm climate in October or November end, which is known as 'gipsy summer'.
