Plovdiv is a Bulgarian city. The city derived its name from the Thracian word 'Pulpudeva' or 'Philippolis' which means the city of Philip. It is the administrative center of Plovdiv Province in southern Bulgaria. Plovdiv is known as a Thracian fortified settlement named Eumolpias. The city was renamed by Philip II of Macedon who conquered it in 342 BC. It later became independent under the Thracians and was named Trimontium 'City of Three Hills'. The city is also the largest and most important city of Thrace and has become the second largest city of Bulgaria.
Area & Location:Lies on both banks of the Maritsa in the central part of the Upper Thracian Plain, Plovdiv is located at 42°9' Latitude North and 24°45' Longitude East. The city occupies an area of 510 sq. km with an elevation of 164 m. Around 376,918 people reside in the city, having a density of 907 per sq. km.
