Sao Paulo is the capital of Sao Paulo, the Brazilian state. Founded on January 25, 1554, by Portuguese Jesuit missionaries José de Anchieta and Manoel da Nóbrega, São Paulo was earlier named as São Paulo de Piratininga. It officially became a city in 1711. People from Italy and Japan immigrated to the city in 1881 and it increased with the industrial development in the 20th century. The city was first inhabited by Bandeirantes, with the help of whom the city was territorially expanded. It is now the financial and industrial center of Brazil.
