Sao Paulo People


Sao Paulo people are known as paulistanos. The presence of a variety of cultures makes the city a lively one. There are different ethnic communities in Sao Paolo. These include Italian, Japanese, Lebanese Christians and Arabs.

Large scale immigration took place in Sao Paulo in the 19th and 20th century. Most of the ancient settlers of Sao Paulo were from southern Portugal. The major ancestral groups in Sao Paulo are the Portuguese, Italians and the Spanish.
There are a large number of Italian people in Sao Paulo. A number of people from Germany have also immigrated to Brazil and settled in Sao Paulo. The people of Asian descent are small in number. These include the Koreans, Chinese and the Japanese. The Arab people of Sao Paulo generally have their origin in Lebanon and Syria. Afro-Brazilian descendents are also found in the city. The presence of so many different cultures under one roof has also led to variegation in food habits, dress and culture.
