Sao Paulo history is rich and varied. According to the history of Sao Paulo, it became an official city in the year 1711. As per the annals of Sao Paulo history, the city was founded by Jesuit missionaries Manuel da Nobrega and Jose de Anchieta in the 16th century. They established a mission and named it Colegio de Sao Paulo de Piratininga. The main motive behind establishing this mission was to convert the Brazilians to the Catholic Religion.
Another significant event of Sao Paulo history took place during the 17th and 18th century, when a group of explorers named Bandeirantes came to the city. They contributed immensely to the city of Sao Paulo. They were mainly responsible for the Brazilian territorial expansion beyond the Tordesilhas Line. The credit of discovering several mines of precious metals

and stones also goes to the group.
The city gained economic prosperity through export of coffee in the 19th century. In 1881, the city witnessed influx of immigrants from Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Industrial development in the city started in the 20th century. Service industries mainly came up in the late 20th century and the city had an economic boom.
Another major event in the history of the Sao Paulo city was the establishment of the University of Sao Paulo's Law School or the Largo Sao Francisco. This institution is regarded to be one of the first institutions in Brazil, the other academic institutions being the Law School of Recife and the Universidade Federal do Amazonas.
