Geography of Sao Paulo


The Geography of Sao Paulo gives overall information on the location, climate, topography, environmental conditions and natural resource of the city. Sao Paulo has varied geographical features.

Sao Paulo is the capital of the Sao Paulo state in South East of Brazil. The latitudinal and longitudinal extent of the city spans from 23°32'36?S and 46°37'59?W respectively. Due to its prime location and suitable geographical features, Sao Paulo is also one of the populous cities in the southern hemisphere.

The geography of Sao Paulo has endowed the place, great topographical features. Sao Paulo lies on Serra do Mar, Portuguese for "Sea Range" plateau, which is an integral portion of the Brazilian Highlands. The average altitude of the city from the sea level is around 800 meters. The Atlantic Rain Forest lies in the northern part of the city.

The climate of the city is humid and subtropical.
Temperature during summer remains around 30°C. Frosts are very rare during the winter. Monsoons are also experienced by Sao Paulo city, from the month of November to March.

Vegetation in Sao Paulo mainly consists of coffee. Initially the majority of the land was under forest cover, but plants and trees were cut off for inhabitation and industrialization. The soil is not very fertile too.

Sao Paulo River

River Tiete is the major Sao Paulo River. River Tiete was once the primary source of freshwater in Sao Paulo. The river was also used for recreational purposes. Water transport is very important on the River Tiete. The water of the river is also used for generation of hydroelectricity. The river became highly polluted in the 20th century. Apart from this river, there are many more rivers in Sao Paulo, most of them being tributaries of the Parana River.
