Sarajevo

Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is also the capital of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity and the center of the Sarajevo Canton. Being the largest urban center of the country, the city is famous for its traditional religious diversity. The city that underwent the longest siege in modern military history during the Bosnian war revived and became a major center of culture and economic development in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo has been made an important administrative center by the Ottoman Empire in 1850. It became the capital of the Drina Province after the unification of Balkans under the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Being the largest city of the nation, Sarajevo is comprised of four municipalities with each having its own municipal government.

Area & Location: Located in the Sarajevo valley of Bosnia proper, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps and situated around the Miljacka River, the city lies close to the center of the triangular Bosnia and Herzegovina in southeastern Europe. Situated at 43º52'0? Latitude North and 18º25'0? Longitude East, Sarajevo covers 142 sq. km. It sits 500m above sea level. The city has a population of 308,558.
