Francisk Skornia Gomel State University is one of the best educational and research centers in Gomel. It started its operation in the year 1929 as The Agricultural Pedagogic Institute. This university houses 17 well equipped research laboratories encouraging the students and the professors to research in various fields. The curriculum of the university aims to integrate higher education with fundamental science.

The Gomel State Medical University was founded in 1990. The clinical medical base of this university is considered to be one of the best in the whole of Belarus.
