Music classes in the 18th century were held in the Petrashen private schools,teachers training centers, boy's gymnasiums and technical railroad colleges. Gomel music classes were held in piano, harmony, theory of music, counterpoint and ensemble playing. In 1908 Rozemblun's piano courses were opened.
With the beginning of the Soviet period choir studios were opened by Pukst,Rozenblum and Turencov. All these studios were united as the State Music University in 1920. The music conservatory of Gomel was inaugurated in 1919 and later again reorganized into Tchaikovsky.
Again in 1921,the state music college was opened and it became a very important part of the cultural life of Gomel. In 1958 the school was renamed after Nestor Sokolvsky, who took active part in the uplift of amateur arts. Finally in 1994 the school became Sokolvsky College of Arts. In 2003 a branch of Belarusian music academy was opened. Traditional Gomel Music is still very famous.
