Lev Genrikhovich Shnirelmen had started research in geometry, algebra and topology as a student but was not satisfied with his result, so did not wish publish the same. In 1929, he was chosen as the chair of methematics in Novocherkassak, but by 1930 he returned to Moscow. From the year of 1934, he worked at the Mathematical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Lev Genrikhovich Shnirelmen's contributions to topological methods in the calculus of variations were incredibly significant. He had also introduced new ideas into number theory in the year of 1930. Using these ideas, he had also proved a weak part of the Goldbach's conjecture showing that every number is the sum of 20 primes.
Lev Genrikhovich Shnirelmen had shown remarkable abilities since he was a young child. His parents and others all the more realized this, by the fact that he completed the school course of mathematics, at home.
