There are a number of hospitals in Gomel that serve the ailing people of the city. Among all the hospitals in Gomel, the Gomel City Hospital of Emergency Medicine is the most important that fulfills the medical requirement of the city and the adjoining areas. In July 2001, the century-old building of the Gomel Emergency Hospital was completely renovated.
In Belarus, the Gomel Region and the adjoining districts of Bragin, Khoyniki and Narovla have the highest level of radioactive contamination after the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine. Huge number of people are constantly facing this serious menace. The Gomel hospitals are constantly serving these sick people with the aid from various countries

The three district hospitals and outpatient clinics including the Women's Hospital in Gomel Region are being modernized with medical facilities and equipments. To improve the maternity and pediatric departments many modern devices like ultrasound devices and many more are being installed in the hospitals.
In Belarus, the health facilities are concentrated on the treatment by doctors in hospitals. The basic medical services in Gomel is not decentralized and as per the statistics only 10 % of the doctors are general practitioners.
