Gomel Geography includes the geographical coordinates of the city, which are 52°33'N and 31°10'E. It is also known by the name of Belarusian Homyel. Being the second largest city of Belarus and the capital of Gomel region, the population of Gomel, as estimated in the year 1990 is 507,000. Gomel is situated in the south eastern part of the country and is close to sharing its border with Ukraine and Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A considerable part of the population resides in this region even after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

geography, which is 1270 meters above the sea level. One of the most important river that flows by the left side of the city is the river Sozh, which is a tributary of the river Dnieper. Served by the river and its tributaries, the city is one of the most important ports in the country. Some of the other major tributaries of the river Dnieper that flow through the region are Pripiats and Berezina. While the river flows from the north to the southern part of the country, the flood lands flanking the river comprise of numerous lakes. Situated in the Polesskaya and Pridneprovskaya lowlands, the Gomel relief features comprise majorly of lowlands.
