Earlier the football teams in Gomel were supervised by the regional center head. Eventually Gomel joined Belorussian SSR in 1926. Football is the favorite sports of the people of Gomel. In an inter city match, the Gomel football team - Altair won over the Mogilev team by 1:0 in the finals of the junior football tournament called Leather Ball matched in Postavy.

Some of the best football players of Gomel are Artem Sinitsa, Denis Puzakov, Mikhail Babichev, Yegor Troyakov, Alexander Kucherov and many more. The football matches of Gomel is supervised by the Belarusian Presidential Sports Club. Usually the tournaments where the footballs leagues of Gomel take place are conducted jointly by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, the Belarusian Republican Youth Union, the Ministry of Education and the Football Federation of Belarus. Gomel Football has acquired enough fame in the regional and inter-state matches of Europe since the past few years.
