Gomel Demography


Gomel Demography refers the demographic of population residing in Gomel, Belarus. According to the Census report of January1, 2005 the total population of Gomel comprises of 1 million 495 thousand people. About 30 percent of the people in the rural areas of the city.

The total population comprises of different religions like Jews( 0.4%), Russians( 11%), Poles ( 0.2%), Ukrainians ( 3.3 %) and Belorussians ( 84.2%) and other nationalities ( 0.9 %).

The human power resources of Gomel includes about 920 thousand people. About 61.3 percent of the population consists of the working population. The working population of Gomel consists of 63.2 percent industrial workers and others are office workers. In Gomel, about 260 thousand persons work for the
private sector and 374 thousand people work for state run companies.

In Gomel city the total life expectancy was 72.6 years in the year 1986 but in 2000 it dropped to 67.6 years. The total number of births was more than the total number of deaths. The total population growth was recorded 8 percent. By the birth rate has been dropping every year. In 1986 the birth rate was 17.2, while in 2000 it was recorded 9.7 percent. The mortality rate has grown from 9.2( 1986) percent to 14.8 (2000).
