Sydney Gold Rush Period

The Sydney gold rush period started when gold was discovered in Australia during the year 1851. The Sydney gold rush period was a significant period in the history of Sydney, as people from all over the world shifted their bases to the city after this discovery. Although gold was discovered in a region about 170 kilometers west of Sydney, the City of Sydney along with Melbourne and Victoria largely benefited from this gold discovery.

Hundreds and thousands of immigrants came and settled in Sydney and this tiny city grew in importance. As per the reports, about 370,000 immigrants had arrived in Australia during this period and more than 300 international ships were docked in the Australian harbor. Australian society, as a whole, showed significant signs of improvement and prosperity from its penal status.

The effects of the gold rush period are still evident in Sydney, as it has developed into one of the most significant cities of Australia. The society and culture of the city of Sydney was significantly affected under the influence of the gold rush and the wealthier class of people made their presence felt in the city. Australia, at present, accounts for about 11% of the total production of gold in the whole world. The gold rushes have become an important part of the Australian culture and identity.
