Sydney History

Sydney history dates back to the time when the Aboriginal tribes had come and settled in the region about 40,000 years ago. Sydney history is very interesting and the two most important periods in the history of Sydney are the European settlement in the region and the period of gold rush.

The city of Sydney was initially inhabited by three main tribal groups namely the Dharawal, Kuringgai and Dharug who had their own culture and traditions. The first British settlers arrived in Sydney in the year 1770 when Captain James Cook landed on the Botany Bay. During the late 18th century, under the commandment of Captain Arthur Philip, the first European settlement in Australia came up in the New South Wales region. The first settlers were mostly convicts who settled around the Sydney Cove and this is where the modern-day city came up.

The other significant historical event was the discovery of gold in an area near Sydney. As a result of this discovery, the city of Sydney witnessed a huge growth of population. During the Second World War, Sydney suffered slight damages, although several Japanese submarines were captured in the Sydney harbor. By the beginning of 20th century, Sydney had emerged as one of the most influential Australian cities and as one of the most popular metropolitan cities in the world.
