Sydney Demography



Sydney demography refers to the population of people in the metropolitan and suburban areas of the city of Sydney. The Sydney demography clearly proves the fact that Sydney is one of the most populous Australian city and with a total population of about 22,000 in central Sydney area and about 4 million people in greater Sydney region. According to the 1996 census, the population of Sydney was 3, 879,400.

As per the recent survey of 2001, the centre of Sydney has the highest population density in Australia, with more than 4000 people per square kilometer.
Every year, thousands of people flock to the city of Sydney in search of better job opportunities, accommodation facilities and pleasant weather. The working population in central part of Sydney is ten times the residential population.

Northern Sydney has 90% Australian born people, while central Sydney has 67% of the native population. The maximum number of immigrant population in Sydney comprises people from china, New Zealand, United States of America and India. Apart from these, people also flock from Lebanon, Italy, Vietnam and Philippines. It is expected that by the end of 2010, the population of Sydney city will cross more than 5 million people if the present rate of migration continues.
