Sydney Festival


Sydney Festival is the largest and most widely attended annual event of Sydney, which is held for three weeks in the month of January. The Sydney Festival was held for the first time in the year 1977 and has the reputation of being an annual event of modern and popular programming of dance, music, film, visual arts, free outdoor events and theatre.

The Sydney Festival was originally proposed by the Sydney Committee, City of Sydney and the New South Wales Government. The main idea was to attract people to the main city center in the month of January, which is a holiday period.
For a period of three weeks, there are about 80 events of various artists from Australia and other parts of world held at this festival.

The Sydney Festival attracts about 1 million viewers ever year and also showcases some of the best and fresh talents. Fergus Linehan is the director of the Sydney Festival since 2006 and will continue in the post till 2009.

The other popular festivals in Sydney are Sydney Film Festival, Sydney Royal Easter Show and Big Day Out all of which are great crowd-pullers and have become a part of Australian culture.
