Melbourne Water Supply Catchments
Melbourne in Australia is globally one of the five cities that has protected water catchment areas. Almost 90% of Melbourne's water requirement comes from the catchment area located in the Yarra Ranges lying to the east of Melbourne. The uninhabited Yarra Ranges are covered with ash forests and closed to the public so that it remains unspoilt.
Melbourne Water Treatment and Quality
As most of Melbourne's water comes from catchment areas, it requires minimal treatment. Every year, almost 50,000 tests are performed to ensure the water quality collected from about 160 sites.
The water that reaches the consumer is of the highest quality and exceeds the parameters set by the National Health and Medical Research Council. Melbourne inhabitants are very particular about Melbourne water and have great regards for it. It is based on the principle of ensuring highest quality at source.
