The Irish and the British people were the first European people to settle in the city of Melbourne. The population of the city mainly increased after the gold rush during the early 1850s.
On the other hand, in the early part of 20th century along with the British and Irish people, few Greeks and Italians settled in Melbourne. Soon it became the biggest Greek city outside the southeastern European territory. English is said to be the most-spoken language of Melbournians. Besides this, Greek and Chinese languages are also spoken by the city dwellers. In Melbourne, most of the people are Christians. It is also seen that Melbourne houses the biggest Jewish community.
According to the recent census report Melbourne is the second most populated city of Australia. The 2006 census report says this Australian city has an approximate population of 3.74 million. Majority of the Melbourne Population is highly interested in the sports activities and also participate in those sports events. In the true sense, Melbourne is the cultural hub of Australia.
