Walter Hall, an English man, in the middle of 19th century, visited Australia. After his death, Eliza, his widow was suggested to open a trust by Richard Casey. Later, Harry Allen and Richard Casey established a center for medical research.

The research institute was set up with funds from the trust, after Eliza has died. Dr. Sydney Patterson became the full time director of the institute for the first time.
