Gold Treasury Museum Melbourne

Gold Treasury Museum Melbourne is one of the beautiful tourists attractions in the city of Melbourne. It is also known by the name of Old
Treasury building. In fact, the later one is the more popular name, as this edifice had been used as the Government treasury for years. In the initial days of its establishment, the Old Treasury building in Melbourne was used for storing gold mined in Victoria. The architecture of the Gold Treasury Museum had been the brainchild of John James Clark. Clark was only 19 years old when he designed the building. The style of the building typifies the revival of Renaissance architecture in Australia. The construction of the building took place between 1857 and 1862.

Later in 1877 - 1878, the venue of the treasury was shifted to some other place and this grand building was used for housing the principle government department in Melbourne. The government activities in the Old Treasury Building were carried largely from the Gold Treasury Museum prior to the set up of the Parliament House building.

It was not until 1994, that the government activities had been completely removed from the Old Treasury building that the place had been converted to a museum. The museum displays different phases of the history of Melbourne, the accounts of gold associated with the building. Also, a very interesting exhibition is on the caretaker of the Gold Treasury Museum Melbourne, who lived here for a considerable period of time along with his family.
