Flinders Street Station Melbourne

The Flinders Street Station is the oldest railway station in Melbourne as well as in Australia. The railway station was built in 1854 and it still claims
the heaviest suburban railway crowd in the Southern Hemisphere. It was opened for public use on September 12th, 1954. The platform of the station is around 700 meters, which makes it the longest in Australia. The railway station is situated to the corner of the Swanston Street and the corner of Flinders. The Yarra River is located very close to the station.

The buildings of the Flinders Street Station are characterized by clocks. These clock-hung buildings have become landmarks for meeting places and have also shown the time of arrival and departure of trains. The original clocks were analog clocks, which had for a short while been replaced by digital clocks. The replacement was however, not accepted by the people due to nostalgic reasons. Soon the analog clocks had to be placed back. There are a number of them over the main entrance of the building. A second building at the Flinders Street Station was built 1899 and 1910.

Renovation of Flinders Street Station

Recently, there have been further additions to the original structure of the building of Flinders Street Station and some renovations. New escalators, platforms and lifts have been constructed in order to modernize the station and deal with the huge crowd. Certain changes have also been made in the V Line booking office. Back in 1985, new electric lines and lighting had been arranged for and the staircases had also been renovated.
