City Council Melbourne

Melbourne City Council is assigned with the duty to look after the welfare of the city of Melbourne as well as its governance. The city
council is headed by the mayor who looks into the development of the city. The present mayor of Melbourne is John So. The council is housed at the town hall of the city.

The first Mayor of Melbourne City Council was Sir Samuel Gillott. The current Melbourne Mayor came to office after Peter Costigan. John So was elected as mayor for the first time in the year 2001. He was the first mayor in Melbourne to have been directly elected for this post. So was re-elected for the second time as the Mayor of Melbourne City Council in 2004.

John So was previously appointed as the Councilor of the City of Melbourne twice. He was also the Commissioner of the Ethnic Affairs Commission of Melbourne. He aims at developing cordial relations with cities of other countries like China, Japan and others. He has taken the initiative to introduce a number of direct flights from Melbourne to the cities like Osaka and Tianjin.

Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board was established in 1919. This board controls the tramway services in the city of Melbourne. It comes under the Melbourne City Council. Mr. Alex Cameron was appointed as the first Chairman of Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board, also known as M & MTB. This board took up other trusts under it.
