Royal Australian Mint

The Royal Australian Mint in Canberra had been officially inaugurated on 22nd February in 1965 by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh. The Royal Australian Mint was set up in order to produce decimal coinage in the country, which would be circulated 1966 onwards.

From the time it opened the production of Royal Australian Mint has crossed eleven billion coins. In a single day it has the capacity to mint more than two million coins and annually it can produce six hundred million coins.

The Royal Australian Mint has produced coins for Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Western Samoa, Fiji, Cook Islands, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, Bangladesh, Tokelau and Israel.

The other functions of Royal Australian Mint are to manufacture medals, seals, medallions and tokens for sporting and tourism groups and private and public sectors, nationally as well as internationally.

As a result of its commitment to quality the Royal Australian Mint it achieved accreditation to International Quality Standards ISO 9002 and was the first Mint in the entire world to achieve it.

The Royal Australian Mint is a very important tourist attraction in Canberra as it was the first mint in the country and was not connected to the Royal Mint in London.
