National Library of Australia

The National Library of Australia is proud of being the largest reference library of the country and hence one of the greatest tourist attractions of Canberra.
A crucial role is played by the National Library of Australia in Canberra by collecting and preserving the documents about the nation and its people. Apart from this, the library is also known for housing materials, which are from other parts of the world. This is done both by the library and through collaboration with international libraries.

It is gathered from the history of National Library of Australia, that its origins went back to 1901. The library was shifted to Canberra from Melbourne in 1927.

It got separated from the Parliamentary Library by an Act of Parliament. In 1968 a new building of National Library of Australia was opened along the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra.

The collection of National Library of Australia is vast and not restricted just to printed material in the form of books, serials, maps, ephemera and music and but online publications also. In addition it collects unpublished material like oral histories, manuscripts and pictures and has a superb collection in the fields of dance and performing arts.
