Australia National Archives


The National Archives of Australia is one of the agencies of the Australian Government. This Archive of Australia was established under the Archives Act of 1983. The location of National Archives of Australia head office is in Canberra along with an office and a reading room in every state capital and Darwin.

The National Archives is an executive authority within the office of the Minister for the Arts and Sport. The National Archives of Australia Advisory Council provides advice to the Minister for the Arts and Sport and also to the Director-General of the Archives. The present Director-General of the National Archives is Ross Gibbs.

The national archival collection include variety of paper, audiovisual and digital elements that reflect the
Australian nationality. They also maintain a wide collection of the administrative history of the Australian Government so that records can be associated to the original Australian context. There are conservation laboratories located in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney.
