Canberra Australia is poised in the northern end of the Australian capital territory. The city is located midway between the two major cities of Melbourne and Sydney. The capital is 300 km southwest from the of Sydney and 650 kilometers north east of Melbourne. Canberra, capital of Australia covers a land area of 805.6 square kilometers. The Molonglo river cuts across Canberra. The river has been dammed to form an artificial body of water known as Lake Burley Griffin right at the heart of Canberra city.
The orientation of the inner city of Canberra has be hierarchically structured into districts , town centers, group centers and Canberra suburbs which are either residential areas or major industrial areas. Various districts have been divided into small suburbs. A town center is located in the central point of these suburbs, and they have different shops and business centers where essential amenities are available.
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has large hills. Mount Majura, Mt Taylor, Mt Ainslie, Mt Mugga Mugga and the Black Mountain are the prominent ones. The vegetation surrounding Canberra city are mainly bush lands and open savanna grasslands. Eucalyptus forests, open grassland and swamps are common.
Famous architect Walter Burley Griffin has designed this capital city. Canberra location and orientation is that of a planned garden city by the side of the beautiful artificial Lake Burley Griffin.
