The Becker House in Canberra exhibits some of the revolutionary architectural ideas of that period. It is often refered to as the 'Martian Embassy' by the Canberrans. At the time when it was built it was one of the biggest dome built in Australia. It is a popular belief that an early model Holden motorcar was the architectural inspiration of Becker House at Canberra. On 1 December 1956 the building design committee met in Adelaide to examine plans, which had been submitted by six architects. As per the plan of the architects, the 45 ton concrete dome was built with 16 thin supports. In 1959, the construction of the Shine Dome Canberra was finally accomplished. There are two floors in Becker House which can accommodate 156 people.
The building was renamed as Becker House in the year 1962. This famous landmark of Canberra attracts tourists from various parts of the world.
