Yerevan





Yerevan is the capital of Armenia and also its largest city. The city, which was liberated by Russian troops during the second Russian-Persian war in1827, began to grow economically and politically. The city became the capital of the independent First Republic of Armenia in 1918. It became the capital of the newly formed Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1920 and is also one of the 15 republics of the Soviet Union. The city became the capital of the independent Republic of Armenia in1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was deprived of gas, heating and electricity until 1996. At present the city has become a leading industrial, cultural, and scientific center in the Caucasus region and also the industrial, transportation and cultural center of Armenia.

Area & Location: Situated on the Hrazdan River, the city is located in Eastern Armenia in the Northeastern part of the Ararat Valley. The upper part of the city is surrounded by mountains on three sides. Its elevation ranges from 900 to 1,300 meters above the sea level. Located at 40º10' Latitude North and 44º31' Longitude East, the city has a population of 1,088,300.

Transportation: The city has a well-maintained infrastructure. Train, car, bus and taxi serve as the major public transportation facilities in the city. An international airport, The Zvartnots Airport serves Yerevan. A short flight from Baku to Yerevan offers a real experience for the passengers.

Hotels: The city is rich with hotels ranging from cheap to luxurious hotels. These hotels provide all facilities to its customers including comfortable accommodation. Yerevan Hotel, Armenia Hotel, Aviatrans Hotel, Ani Plaza Hotel, Sil Hotel, Bass Hotel, Dvin Hotel, Erebuni Hotel and Razdan Hotel are the famous hotels in the city. The Armenia Marriott Hotel, situated in the heart of the city at Republic Square is mostly chosen by the tourists.

Places of Attraction: The two major tourist attractions of the city are the ruins of an Urartu fortress and a Roman fortress. Statue of Sasountsi David stands as the landmark of the city. The Matenadaran archives that hold a rich collection of valuable ancient Armenian, Greek, Syrian, Hebrew, Roman and Persian manuscripts are the other interesting places in the city. The city also has number of museums and theaters, botanical gardens and zoos where people relax themselves. St. Gregory, the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan and Russian Orthodox Church are often visited by pilgrims. The Urban Mosque of Yerevan and "Blue Mosque," the largest mosque are the other pilgrim centers in the city.
