During the year 1993 due to bombardment Kabul Museum lost many treasures. This was the most tragic incident. At first the upper galleries of the museum was ransacked. After this the persisting artifacts of the museum was shifted to the lower galleries. The United Nations tried to cease the robbery during 1994. For ceasing the ransacking the United Nations repaired the doors and bricked up the windows of the museum. But unfortunately all these efforts were failed as the raiders ransacked around 90% collection of the museum. The stolen items of the museum were bought by private collectors as well as antique dealers.
When the Taliban leader Mullah Omar declared a decree in late February the Taliban determined to demolish all pre-Islamic statues and objects of Afghanistan during early March 2001. Many statues of the museum was demolished by the Taliban. Two jumbo Buddhas and other ancient historical statues in Ghazni were ruined by the Taliban.
Kabul Museum is notable for the collection of treasures and artifacts.
