Id Gah Mosque


The Id Gah Mosque is the largest mosque of Kabul and is the main center for religious and national celebrations of Afganistan. The mosque was built by Abdor Rahman Khan in 1893. It is the most important religious site of the country. Situated in Shar-e –Barq in Kabul, this has become one of the popular tourist destinations.

The Id Gah Mosque of Kabul reflects the rich Muslim architecture and Islamic heritage. People from far-off places visit this mosque to offer their prayers. Located in the wealthiest part of Kabul, it attracts a large number of devotees for offering prayers twice a year. During Eid, lakhs of people visit this holy place
and all the pious rituals are held in the celebration.

The Id Gah Mosque in Kabul has become an unofficial political hub of the country. Due to its influence on the decisions of the government it has gained immense importance over the years. The Id Gah Mosque is a ceremonial square lying in close proximity to the National Stadium of Kabul. The outside area of the mosque is used to mainly used for transporting goods from Peshawar to other parts of the country and vice versa. The mosque was used by Amanullah to announce independence after the third Anglo-Afgan war.
