During the reign of Taliban in the 90's after bombing the upper floors of Afghan National Museum most of the collection of this museum was ransacked. At the same time the Taliban demolished numerous early Buddhist treasures. The ransacked items are still put up in auctions all over the world. During 2003 an investment of US$350,000 was done by the international community for renovating this museum. After renovation President Hamid Karzai inaugurated Afghan National Museum on 29th September 2004. Now Afghan National Museum in Kabul houses 2,500 artifacts which includes numerous ivory treasures, antiquities from early Buddhism, Islam and Kushan, etc.
