Kabul Under Taliban

Kabul under Taliban witnessed a significant change in all aspects of its life. The Taliban regime took over the reins of the Afghanistan capital, Kabul, in 1996 and introduced an altogether different way of life. The civil war in Afghanistan was the time when Taliban gradually emerged as a strong force in Afghanistan. The Talibans were part of the Mujahideen. Following the retreat of the Soviet forces from Afghanistan, an interim government was established in Kabul by an alliance between the Mujahideen and Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was appointed as the President. But the alliance soon disintegrated and numerous other factions cropped up. The Taliban regime in Kabul introduced Islamic fundamentalism. After its introduction the life and times of Kabul were never the
same again. There was restriction on all forms of mass media. The position and condition of women was greatly affected by the coming of the new regime. Restrictions were imposed on their free movement and education. A formal dress code for women was introduced throughout the land. The restriction on their free movement deprived them of their economic rights. They could no longer work and it altered their way of life considerably. The Talibans were united by their fundamentalist approach to religion. They managed to bring Kabul and the whole of Afghanistan under their rule. But despite this unified rule there was hardly any significant development in the living standards of the country.
