Soviet Troops in Kabul

The Soviet troops in Kabul made their presence felt in 1979. They tried to establish their domination over the entire country and Kabul was the place where it all began. The invasion, however, proved to be an utter failure. The Soviet armies marched into Kabul with the objective of enlarging their territory and to exercise greater influence in Asia. They also wanted to preserve the communist government in the country which was only backed by the armed forces. The Soviet invasion of Kabul was effected with the help of a one hundred thousand strong army. The Soviet forces swept over Kabul and appointed Babrak Karmal as a leader.
However, he was just a nominal head and the real power was vested in the Soviet authorities. Though they managed to conquer Kabul easily, they faced a tough time encountering the insurgence of the people from the countryside. The invasion of the Soviet in Kabul had an obvious impact on the life of its people. The frequent bombings in the city of Kabul and the countryside led to a huge loss of life and property. The Soviet armies were forced to leave the country in the wake of the exhaustion of their military resources, worldwide condemnation of their act and rising diplomatic pressure.
