British Invasion of Kabul

The British Invasion of Kabul and the country of Afghanistan was carried out through the three successive Anglo-Afghan war. The first Anglo- Afghan War began in 1838 with the British marching towards the Afghan land along with the Indian forces. The battle concluded in 1842 and the British armies marched into Kabul from Peshawar and Kandahar to free the British prisoners of war who remained in captivity. Kabul was captured by the Britishers in 1839. As the British armies retreated from Kabul they were exterminated in large numbers irrespective of the Afghans agreeing to give them safe passage through the territory.
As a consequence of this a section of the British army ravaged the town of Kabul and set a part of it on fire. The British forces re-established themselves in Kabul in 1879. This was after the resident British officer and his staff were killed by the Afghans. The Third Anglo-Afghan war was waged in 1919. The Afghan forces managed to hold their fort this time and the Britishers were convincingly defeated. Kabul was now completely free from British control. It acquired its independence from the British Crown following years of freedom struggle. British invasion of Kabul thus proved to be futile.
