CITIES OF AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan is located in Southern Asia. This Asian Country is located in Southern Asia, north and west of Pakistan and east of Iran. The ten largest cities of Afghanistan include Kabul, Kandhahar, Mazari Sharif, Heart, Jalalabad, Kunduz, Ghazni, Balkh, Bamyan and Baghlan. The following are politically, geographically or economically notable places of Afghanistan. In terms of population, the five largest cities of Afghanistan are Kabul, Mazari Sharif, Heart, Jalalabad and Kandahar.

The population of Kabul is around 2,000,000. The rugged terrain limits travel within Afghanistan. The city covers an area of less than 25 km. This area is for shipping goods to and from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In Afghanistan, petroleum products are piped in from Uzbekistan to Bagram and from Turkmenistan to Shindand.

Amu Darya covers a total area of 1200 km. This area handles vessels up to 500 metric tons. The fast flowing rivers of the country are used chiefly for transportation of free-floating timber. Ports that are located on Amu Darya include Keleft, Shir Khan and Kheyrabad. In Afghanistan, there are about 21,000 km of highways. 13 percent of these highways are paved, 8 percent are gravel and 79 percent are dirt.

Public transportation in Afghanistan is generally by bus and truck. Women ride in the front and are separated from men. City dwellers generally travel by bus and bicycle. In the countryside, most Afghans travel either by foot, donkey, horseback and occasionally by camel.

In Kabul and Kandhahar, there are many international airports. There are 48 airports in Afghanistan, half of which have paved runways. The national airline is Ariana Afghan Airlines. Bakhtar Afghan Airlines also provide some domestic service. Camels and other pack animals are used for conveying goods. Afghanistan depends on neighboring countries for shipment of goods to and from borders.

The largest airport that serves Afghanistan is located at Kabul International Airport (3500 m runway). Kabul International Airport is Afghanistan's largest airport. It is also, the primary hub for international civilian flights.

Kandahar Airfield is a dual-use airport that serves civilian traffic to the city, Kandahar. Mazar-e-Sharif Airfield is a dual-use airport that serves the northern and central portions of Afghanistan. Heart Airfield is a primary civil airport serving the eastern portion of Afghanistan.
