The key difference between Dian hong and other Yunnan black teas is the amount of fine leaf buds, or golden tips present in the dried tea leaf. Yet, such acknowledgments are often confusing due to the numbers of varieties of teas produced in Yunnan as well as the ambiguous nature of their color.

- Broken Yunnan:
This type of tea is a cheap tea, used basically for blending. This kind of Yunnan black tea contains very few golden buds and is generally bitter to taste on its own. - Yunnan Gold:
This Yunnan Dian hong tea consist fewer golden buds and more dark tea leaves.
The brewage bears a brassy red color which is different from other Yunnan black teas. The brilliant sweet taste of the brewage is not that strong as Yunnan pure gold tea. The color of this Yunnan tea is brassy red.
- Yunnan Pure Gold:
Yunnan pure gold is considered as the best type of Yunnan tea. It contains only golden tips. In you concentrate on the leaves of tea you can find them covered in fine hairs. From a distance the dried Yunnan pure gold tea appears bright orange in color. The color of the tea liquor is bright red. The taste of the Yunnan pure gold tea is sweet, and you can have a gentle aroma flavor in it. The leaves of this Yunnan tea are reddish in color.
