The inception and birth story of the coastal island in the Southern part of China is being retrieved everyday with new archaeological findings thus giving a shape to the History of Hong Kong. No written records about the place is found until the intervention of Imperial China or the British in the land. The early history of Hong Kong was essentially a History of small pocket settlements of fishermen who also produced and sold salt. But as it is said, History is never static, the same small fishing village eventually evolved to become a military port and with time groomed itself to be an International financial center.
The History of Hong Kong reveals that the coastal island have been from time to time ruled by a number of dynasties that include:
- The Qin Dynasty
- Nam Yuet Dynasty
- Han Dynasty
- Tang Dynasty
- Southern Song Dynasty
- Ming Dynasty
All these dynasties ruled the land in different periods of History and thus have their distinct position in the History of Hong Kong.
The territory of Hong Kong which was incorporated within China during the Qin Dynasty was lost to the British with the Chinese defeat in the Opium Wars . In the course of History Hong Kong went into Japanese hands and eventually again came back to the Britishers. It was only in 1990,the 4 th of April that Hong Kong legally became a sovereign country under the Peoples Republic Of China and the Hong Kong basic law was accepted.
The present day Hong Kong is free from the vestiges of old times and show distinct signs of progress and development.
