The smallest administrative sub-divisions in Chile are known as Chile Communes. These communes consist of cities, villages as well as rural communities. Each individual commune is administrated by a municipality, which is headed by one mayor and a group of councilors. These bodies form by direct election and stays in power for four years. The 346 communes of Chile are sorted into 51 provinces and these provinces are again sorted into 13 regions.
