Yelcho lake is a must visit spot for the tourists who come here in Chile. It is a fjord shaped lake situated in the southern portion of the country. The lake is near the Los Lagos region in the Palena Province in Chile.
There are two basin countries of this lake. They are Argentina and Chile. There is a river which originates from this lake and it is also known by the same name. This Yelcho River flows from the north-west of the lake and ends in the Gull of Corcovado which is near Chaiten. The surface area of the lake is one hundred and ten square kilometers. The Futaleufu River is the source of this Yelcho Lake's water. The famous Carretera Austral or the southern highway is along the north western shore of Yelcho Lake at Chile.
It is little shocking to know that the term "Yelcho" has no particular meaning in Spanish. It was the name of a huge ship that actually brought a group of men safely to the land through a sea storm. The ship was preserved in Puerto Williams and a wide area between Chaitenand Futaleufu is named in honor of that ship.
The Lake Yelcho is famous for fly fishing. It is a unique and beautiful experience for the tourists who can enjoy the boat ride in the lake with guides and try their hands in fishing in different holes up to the Michimahuida River. Fishing in Yelcho Lake is indeed a great experience.
Apart from the fishing activities, tourists can also enjoy the mouthwatering local cuisines at the restaurants near by the Lake.
