Rivers in Chile

Rivers in Chile are the very life blood of the country in that they not only support the populations on their banks but are intricately related to the Eco-system and even the history and culture of the country.

The numerous rivers of Chile have a comparatively brief course. Almost all of them have their origin in the Andes and run westwards into the Pacific. The central and northern regions have rivers, which are primarily fed by the timeless snows enshrouding the peaks of the Andes. The most important Chilean rivers are the Maipo, Biobio, Elqui, Loa, Imperial, Aconcagua and Maule. Although the river systems of Chile have little navigational value because of the rapids and waterfalls, they are essential and central to the irrigation system and the hydroelectric power they provide.

The many short but powerful seasonal rivers provide the ideal setting for whitewater rafting experiences. Both the novice and the expert kayakers are drawn to the sources of these rivers for the sake of feeling a thrill unparalleled by any other. These rivers are also supporters of the Eco-systems which have developed on its banks. Diverse unique species of flora and fauna thrive under circumstances that are conducive to their growth.
