Santiago is capital of Chile. It was founded by Pedro de Valdivia on February 12, 1541 and was named Santiago de Nueva Extremadura. The city developed much with its uninterrupted economic growth and became one of Latin America's most sophisticated metropolitan areas. The city suffered slight damage during the War of Independence in the Battle of Maipu. It was named capital in 1818. The extraction of nitrate fertilizer in Northern Chile enhanced the development of the city. The city, which remained a small town during the 19th century grew into a modern city in 1930, and is now considered an important financial center in Latin America. It is also the most important industrial and financial center of Chile and its largest city.
