Mount Cameroon is one of the largest volcano in Africa and this stratovolcano is situated around180 miles from Yaounde(Cameroon's capital). Popularly Mount Cameroon is known as Mount Faka and is the highest peak in the West and Central Africa. Mount Cameroon is a part of Cameroon Volcanic Line and this also includes the Lake Nyos. The Mount Cameroon eruption is the most frequent one and recently it has erupted on May 28, 2000. History of Mount Cameroon reveals that this site has the earliest recorded volcanic eruptions and that was in 5th century BC. On June 7, the Cameroon officials warned the inhabitants of the nearby slopes to vacant the place as the lava flow was subsequently increasing at a speed of 65-80 feet per hour. On May 29, Mt. Cameroon volcano created earthquakes and then from May 31 the lava flow started leading to frequent incandescent eruptions.
Mount Cameroon offers some activities for the adventurous travelers and they can go for mountain climbing which usually starts from Buea. There are again several trails on the mountain and annual race up and down via this route is an important event to watch.
