Located in the West Province of Cameroon, Lake Monoun lies in the Oku Volcanic Field. The geographic coordinates of this lake are 5.58 degree N and 10.59 degree E. A limnic eruption occurred on 15th August 1984. A large amount of carbon dioxide released in that explosion. As a result 37 people were killed. So it is also known as the killer lake of Cameroon.
It is one of the three lakes of the world that have high concentrations of gas which is dissolved deep below the surface. Lake Monoun is situated near the center of a volcanic field. But the eruption of some volcanic gas was not the reason behind this explosion. The emission of carbon dioxide is rather proved to be the reason.
A venting pipe was inserted into the Lake Monoun of Cameroon in 2003 in order to prevent such explosions in future. Another pipe was used initially but it was unable to remove such huge amount of carbon dioxide. Therefore the researchers of University of Michigan suggested to add a new pipe so that more carbon dioxide can be released.
In spite of such disasters Lake Monoun remains an attractive tourist destination. The natural beauty of this lake is sure to win your heart.
