Cameroon People comprise the various ethnic groups living in the country numbering more than an amazing 200 in all. The country is often called the racial crossroads because of the existence of the ethnic groups like the Cameroonian Highlanders, Bantus, Kirbis, etc.
The earliest inhabitants of Cameroon are the pygmies, hunters and food gatherers living in small groups. The ethnic groups of Cameroon include include Duala, Maka, Beti, Fulani, Tikar, Ndjem, Kanuri, etc. Most of the people of Cameroon have distinct indigenous dialects of their own. Cameroonians, influenced by the colonizers, adopted English and French as their official languages.
The religious beliefs of Cameroon people concentrate around the native religious rituals and customs followed since ancient times. Other religions practiced by the Cameroonians include Christianity and Islam. The majority of Cameroon people live in the urban areas of the country.
The three categories into which the
people of Cameroon have been grouped on the basis of linguistic tendencies are as follows:
- People residing in the South speak the Bantu languages
- People staying in the North speak the Sudanic languages
- People living in the West speak the Semi- Bantu languages
