Cameroon Early History

Cameroon Early History is interesting enough to draw your attention towards this country. The Bakas were the early inhabitants of this country. The forest of the east and the south province is still inhabited by them. The Bantu speaking people originated in the highlands of Cameroon. A pastoral Islamic people of the western Sahel, who were known as Fulani came to this country during the late 1770s and early 1800s and the non-Muslim inhabitants were forced to leave the northern part.

Cameroon Early History shows that the Portuguese were the next to come to Cameroon in the 1500s. But it was not until 1870s that the Europeans could settle here as malaria prevented them. The Europeans were mainly interested in coastal trade and slave trade. The northern part of the country became an important center for slave trade.

According to the Early History of Cameroon the Christian missionaries came to Cameroon in the mid 19th century. They began to control the Cameroon life and slave trade was suppressed. The present day Cameroon along with its neighboring countries became German colony of Kamerun in 1884. Buea became the capital of this colony. Later the capital was shifted to Yaounde.

Cameroon's Early History reveals that this colony gets divided between the British and the French after World War I under the June 28, 1919 League of Nations mandate. The country achieved independence in 1961.
