Abbott Laboratories, a pharmaceutical and health care company was founded by Chicago physician Wallace Calvin Abbott in 1888.
Headquartered in Abbott Park, Illinois, Abbott Laboratories is considered as one of the best companies in the country. Abbott Laboratories developed the first HIV blood-screening test in 1895. The main products of Abbott Laboratories are Humira- a drug for rheumatoid arthritis, Norvir- a treatment for HIV, Depakote- an anticonvulsant drug, Synthroid- a synthetic thyroid hormone and Ensure -adult nutrition. The company is also known for the introduction of a synthetic drug Butyn, which is a local anesthetic based on butyl alcohol.
