The Burundi Legislature is an important division of the Burundi government. It is based on the bicameral system comprising of the Senate and the National Assembly. The Burundi parliament consists of hundred seats which are occupied by sixty percent Hutus and forty percent Tutsis. The Burundi parliament has many women as active members of the parliament. The National Independent Electoral Commission has introduced a number of additional seats in the Burundi parliament for ethnic representation. The Burundi Legislative branch also consists of a Senate. There are a total of fifty-four seats in the Senate of Burundi. Among the fifty-four seats, thirty-four seats are occupied by members elected through indirect votes. The remaining seats of the governing body are assigned for various ethnic groups and former state chiefs. The election for selecting Senate members was held in 2005, 29th July and the next is scheduled in 2010.
The members of the Burundi Legislature have the right to propose a bill in the assembly which many come as a law in the near future. When the same text is being proposed by any executive of the parliament, it is known as the government bill. But the senators are not allowed to propose bill in all the sectors, mainly in those areas which come under the Burundi parliament responsibility. The members of the legislative branch of Burundi also have the power for amending laws during its making.
